Northern Minnesota Canoeing & Kayaking

The St. Louis River: In its northern section, this beautiful river offers numerous portages through dense wilderness. The wider southern portion provides easy canoeing, plus several designated campsites and picnic areas along the shores. Whitewater rafting and kayaking are available in the extreme lower portion of the St. Louis' southern route, with rapids classified from one to four. Permits are not required for canoeing on the St. Louis, although watercraft registration is required. For more information, contact the Laurentian Ranger District office at 218-229-8800.

KayakingThe Superior National Forest: The Superior National Forest offers 2,000 lakes and streams, including 13 mapped canoe routes. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA): Known worldwide for its rugged beauty and pristine wilderness, the BWCA offers about 1,500 miles of canoe routes. With nearly 60 entry points, the BWCA provides canoeing opportunities ranging from single-day trips to multi-day wilderness camping and canoeing adventures.
