Great ride on the Stryker today! I left the Lodge at Giants Ridge and headed down Highway 4 to Duluth. There were nice smooth roads all the way in to Island Lake, where there’s a good stop to relax and enjoy the view.
From there I headed downtown to Canal Park and Pier B for lunch. Silos at Pier B Resort is the only on the water restaurant in Duluth. The views of the historic lift bridge are spectacular.
From there, I drove north along the scenic Lake Superior route, which winds through historic downtown Duluth and then – wow! – you’re along Lake Superior heading on up through Two Harbors to Silver Bay.
The route from Silver Bay back to the Lodge at Giants Ridge is a great smooth wide open road. I stopped at the Bassett Town Hall. A great little country stop along the way to stretch your legs.
Then it was on to Skibo Vista before heading back to the Lodge. The Skibo Vista Scenic Overlook offers a beautiful panoramic view of the Laurentian Divide, perfect for viewing any time of the year, but especially gorgeous in the fall. There are picnic tables and a rustic, outdoor bathroom. This site has historic significance as well as a beautiful view: At one time there was an observation tower that was used to watch for forest fires. The pilings for the tower are still in place. From the viewpoint, one can see several different towns and mining facilities.
I started this ride from Giants Ridge, but you can easily start from Duluth (grab breakfast at Silos at Pier B Resort) then plan on enjoying dinner at the Sleeping Giant at the Lodge at Giants Ridge, get a great night’s sleep and then start a leisurely trek back to Duluth.
